Reading not only broadens students’ knowledge, it also improves their language
proficiency. Although many extracurricular reading materials are available, picking one with suitable content and an appropriate language level is essential. It is for this reason that Chou Sing Chu Foundation has published Notable Figures of Singapore for the students in Singapore. Besides cultivating students’ interest in reading Chinese books and helping to improve their command of Chinese, we hope to inspire them with the “Singapore Spirit” found in the stories of these exceptional individuals.

The indomitable spirit and hard work of the generations before us were crucial to Singapore’s success today. The story of their struggle and devotion is a precious heritage that should be passed on to the younger generations. Notable Figures of Singapore collects the stories of 15 outstanding local individuals who devoted themselves to Singapore. Some were committed to improving the people’s welfare, while others sacrificed themselves to defend our home, but all of them have left an indelible mark in Singapore’s history.

Divided into three main sections, each section captures the stories of the notable figures in chronological order. The first section on the
early pioneers features the stories of Tan Kim Seng, Tan Tock Seng, Cheang Hong Lim, Song Ong Siang and Lim Nee Soon, while the
second section on contemporary figures showcases the deeds of Tan Kah Kee, Lim Boon Keng, Lim Bo Seng, Adnan Saidi, Lee Kong Chian, Yusof bin Ishak, and Zubir Said. The third section on modern leaders details the contributions of Lee Kuan Yew, S Rajaratnam and S R Nathan to Singaporean society.

Notable Figures of Singapore also provides hanyu pinyin and English definitions to new Chinese words to help students build a stronger foundation in learning Chinese. This book also features vivid hand-drawn portraits and illustrations. To help students better understand these stories, the “Did You Know?” section at the end of every story provides many interesting anecdotes.

Notable Figures of Singapore is now available in all POPULAR bookstores! You can also get your copy at Chou Sing Chu Foundation’s online store!
