2017 Spring Festival Couplets Competition

Spring Festival couplets are the most commonly seen examples of Chinese couplets, and putting on auspicious couplets to welcome the Chinese New Year is a traditional Chinese custom that dates back millennia.

To celebrate the arrival of the New Year and to promote this unique art of Chinese culture, the Chinese Poetry Centre and Chou Sing Chu Foundation have teamed up to organise “2017 Spring Festival Couplets Competition”.

Categories:

  1. Open (For adults and current students of tertiary education institutions, including junior colleges and pre-university centres)
  2. Junior (For current students of secondary schools)

This competition is open to all Singapore-based contestants.

Prizes (cash value book vouchers)

    • Open Category:
      • First Prize – S$600
      • Second Prize – S$400
      • Third Prize – S$300
      • Merit Prize (7 winners) – S$100 each
    • Junior Category:
      • First Prize – S$300
      • Second Prize – S$200
      • Third Prize – S$100
      • Merit Prize (2 winners) – S$50 each

Rules & Regulations :

  1. Contestants in the Open Category must adhere to the Pingshui Yun (平水韵) rhyme.
  2. Contestants in the Junior Category can choose to write in either the Pingshui Yun (平水韵) rhyme or the New Rhyme (Hanyu Pinyin), but not both in the same work.
  3. All entries must be new original work that has not been previously published in any format, including social media.
  4. All work must be unaided, especially for contestants in the Junior Category.
  5. The maximum number of words for each side of the couplet is 13.
  6. All entries must feature content related to the Chinese New Year.
  7. Each contestant is limited to two entries.
  8. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Submission Notes :

The contestant’s name (both English and Chinese), NRIC, address, contact number, and email address should be included with each entry. For contestants in the Junior Category, please include the name of your current school.

2017 Spring Festival Couplets Competition Winners

The General Society for Chinese Classical Poetry (International) and Chou Sing Chu Foundation teamed up to organise “2017 Spring Festival Couplets Competition” is a great success! We would like to express our biggest thanks to all participants. After much deliberation, our judges have chosen the 12 best composed pieces.

The prize giving ceremony was held on 21st January 2017.
